Ford executives have confirmed the development of new rear-wheel drive products for the Ford and Lincoln brands. While specific product plans were not announced, Ford's CEO Alan Mulally said that rear-wheel drive products are "important going forward," at a dinner with journalists on Tuesday.
Though rear-wheel drive concept cars have been a staple at Ford's auto show displays during the past few years, most notably the Ford Interceptor and Lincoln MKR, Ford's leaders have not given any indication of production possibilities until now.
"We're working on a rear-wheel-drive plan for the enterprise," said Ford's global product chief Derrick Kuzak. A global rear-wheel drive platform developed in Australia, like Pontiac's G8, is a likely candidate to underpin Ford's potential RWD production cars.
